As Christmas holidays are fast approaching, we are enjoying our time together in the classroom talking about Christmas in the past and completing some fun Christmas Art projects.
We’ve had time to move on to Data Management and have been exploring Pictographs and Line Graphs, as well as completing surveys – generating the most effective survey questions. Grade Three’s have been learning about the “mode” in data and the Grade Fours have been recalling their knowledge on “mode” and learning about “median” as well.
In Language, we are right in the “thick” of asking questions when we read. Our next reading strategy! We have been talking about asking “thick” questions and “thin” questions. Ask your child about these!
Writing is still progressing as we compare and contrast our own lives to those of different time periods (Early Settlers and Medieval Societies). Using the “key” words such as “compared to, different from, the same as, like….”, has given us the ability to make a much more definite and better comparison.
Social Studies is continuing with our Inquiry projects. We have many students interested in Aboriginal Tools, Clothing, Transportation and creation stories. We have the Grade Fours exploring many ancient civilizations and learning about The Feudal System, Medieval Weapons, Castle Life, Clothing, and much more. Lots of interesting learning going on.
This week, our word study focus will be on Homophones. Words that are spelled differently, sound the same, but have different meanings. Always a tricky topic! We will have many opportunities to practise and learn these throughout the week.
